I went to see the movie The Nativity yesterday. I took my 8 year old daughter with me. I don’t think I would take a child much younger. Not because the story isn’t amazing, but because the movie moves along pretty slowly.
Overall, I liked the film but some of the scenes were a bit cheesy.
What I really appreciated were the cultural insights into the time when Jesus was born. The movie does a great job of showing that God entered into this world in the absolute lowliest of circumstances.
I recommend you go see it. It will help your focus this holiday season. Grade: B-.
i will probably skip it. it does seem like it would be slow just based off the previews. i do appreciate the fact that they made it though. mike.
I haven’t seen the movie yet, and between being very busy and the lukewarm reviews I’ve read, realistically I’ll probably not see it until the DVD comes out. But I agree with Mike. I’m very happy that movie makers are recognizing that people WANT to see movies that depict events from the Bible. I appreciate the on-screen visual representation. It helps me really experience and digest the context of the culture and of the emotion that we read about.
For other like me who like to see ti as well as read it, take a look at “The Gospel of John” – a movie that goes right along with the scripture.
I hope we’ll see more of the teachings of Christ on screen. I think there is tremendous potential to get the message through to many people who don’t have a relationship with God right now. Our culture is very influenced by what it sees.
Seems Hollywood very much understands the HUGE market potential of Christian entertainment. Bill Bright’s “The Jesus Movie” is the biggest of all time having been seen by more people than any other movie ever made (bigger than Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Jaws, all of ’em). “The Passion of the Christ” was another eyeopener for the moguls. The only reason Hollywood doesn’t cash-in is they can’t seem to get it right on their own. Only Christians really seem to understand how to make a reverent and accurate portrayal of Christian themes. They just have a hard time getting those big budgets.
I haven’t seen it yet but will try very hard to get there. Since we want to see more Christian oriented movies I feel very strongly that we need to go to them. We only see about 1 or 2 movies a year at a theatre so I am NOT a movie goer BUT I will make the effort to get there and support a Christian view.
